Growing up, I lived in International Falls, MN. I remember cold wintry days in January where it was equal to 80 – 100 below with the windchill. While the winters were extremely cold, the long summer days were perfect. The beauty of the majestic pines trees and the clear blue lakes still take my breath away. If I close my eyes, I can recall all my wonderful childhood memories of time spent on the water. I can feel the gentle breeze across my face and I can hear the lovely and lonely cry of the loon.
Our home was lively and loud with the constant activity of four children. I am the oldest. My siblings will tell you I was bossy, but I prefer to think of it as being motherly and concerned for their well-being. I have an identical twin sister and we have been best friends since day one! Our parents gave us a precious gift in raising us in a christian home. They taught us the faith by their everyday actions. They didn’t just tell us to trust Jesus they showed us how to depend upon Him in all situations.
High school was a struggle and a challenge for me. My guidance counselor told me I was not college material and I believed him. My plan to join the Air Force and travel the world quickly ended when they discovered I had asthma. I was a Senior in high school without a plan. I cried for days. Finally, my Dad told me it was time to pull myself together. He told me I was smart enough and encouraged me to go to our local community college. Dad said, “I believe in you and I know God has a plan for you.” I graduated from college with majors in Christian Education and Elementary Education and minors in Youth and Family Ministry.
My husband and I live in Iowa our home is surrounded by a cornfield. I love the beauty of the rolling hills and how the landscape changes as we progress through the seasons. God has blessed us with two amazing boys, they are actually closer to being young men, but my heart has not caught up to how quickly time passes. I am a home school Mom and I love the life we live together as a family. My husband is the love of my life. Our marriage has not been perfect we have experienced heartache, sickness, and loss; and yet as Jesus remained at the center of our marriage we have also known joy, hope, and perfect peace.
I have entered into what I lovingly call the ‘Sunset Years’ of my life not to old, but I am no longer young. There are days I feel like I am ready to conquer the world, but there are also days where I wander around in wonder and try to remember why I entered a room. Coffee and chocolate are two of my favorite food groups, they become even more enjoyable when savored with friends!
As I look back over my life, through the joy and the deep sorrows there is a constant thread of God’s Word bringing encouragement to my heart. In the dim shadows of anxiety, depression, long term health issues, and broken relationships, this verse describes what God did for me. “When I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me.” Micah 7:8b
I have created this place as a space for you to find encouragement in God’s Word. The world can offer us many things but true peace, joy, and hope can only be found in God.
