3 Ways to face fear.

Fear and worry like to wiggle into my mind and take my thoughts captive. Have you ever noticed how one negative thought can multiply into your worst nightmare? Sleep becomes elusive, and your rational thinking and common sense have left the premises.

Looking at me, my son asks if he can take the car and his younger brother fishing. He has just received his driver’s license. Panic grabs hold of my tongue, and a resounding NO comes rushing out of my mouth. I see a glimmer of hurt in his eyes, and slowly a look of understanding crosses his face. Jacob knows I struggle with anxiety. As my heart begins to slow down and I feel like I can breathe again, I tell him that I will ask his Dad. The look of surprise on his face almost makes me laugh, but fear is still lurking and whispering words of doubt in my mind.

Have you ever noticed how one anxious thought leads to another and suddenly your mind ignites into a raging inferno of all the horrible outcomes you can imagine?

It.
Is.
Exhausting.

How do you stop your mind from whirling with worrisome thoughts? The answer is in God’s Word.

When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul. Psalm 94:19

God meets us in His Word, and while we are there, He fills us with peace, hope, and comfort. His love surrounds us, and as we rest in His capable hands, he commands our minds to BE STILL.

As I struggled with letting my boys drive off together, God reminded me that He loves them too. He holds them close to His heart, and He will never let them go.

When my boys returned home from their fishing adventure, their eyes lit up with pure joy. My heart is slowly catching up to the knowledge; they are young men. Letting go of my boys on my own strength would be impossible for me to do, but with God all things are possible.

The Psalms are beautiful prayers, and they help me to focus on God and who He is and what He has done for us. Have you ever noticed you are not able to worship and worry at the same time?

If you find yourself getting anxious, you can do these three things to help you focus on worship instead of worry.

1. Read the God’s Word I’ve created a Fear Not Bible Reading Plan.  You can fill out the form at the end of this post to receive it.

2. Listen to your favorite worship music. I love Spotify you can create Playlists.  I’ve created a new one called Whispers of Peace.  If you click on the highlighted words, you can listen to the songs when you have time.

3.  Keep a gratitude journal.  Take time each day to write down what you are thankful for.  And make sure to take the time to read it and remember all that God has done for you in your life.
